Carved Wooden Birds on Branches, hand crafted by Themba Mathenjwa

Under the shade of an indigenous Mpengende Tree, deep in rural Zululand, sits an
artist of epic proportion. This is the home of Themba Mathenjwe. Born in 1967,
Mathenjwe worked as a labourer and during his time off, whittled away at wooden
sticks creating carved wooden animals. His natural talent was recognised by the late
artist, Peter Engblom, who mentored him and Mathenjwe went on to study at the
then Natal Technikon.
Mathenjwe gets inspiration from nature and his imagination. The branches of the
tree, movement of clouds, and things all around him. He loves the use of bold and
bright colours. His creatures are joyful and whimsical, many sporting a naughty
attitude.
