Acrylic paint on Fabriano 2022 Dimensions (cm): 59,4 x 42
Siphesihle Ntsungwana is an Eastern Cape-born artist residing in Durban, South Africa. Through painting, he explores transitions from the rural area of Bizana, Eastern Cape, to the urbanity of Durban and the related transformation of his identity and art-making. Since moving to the city, his work references mass media and pop culture in an exploration of the youthful imaginings of a millennial, filtering contemporary imagery and social culture, and juxtaposing this to reality. These are presented as in-depth studies of individuals seen in popular culture and rendered in paintings of, at times, single colour gradations of a primary colour. Ntsungwana is a 2021 Fine Art graduate of the Durban University of Technology and offers a fresh perspective on popular culture as it relates to the social diaspora of South African youth. His work has recently featured at PRIZM Art Fair with the KZNSA Gallery (2021) and is enjoying growing recognition from local and international collectors.
