Born in 1992 in eNseleni, Kwazulu Natal, Thembi Mthembu is a multi disciplinary artist who lives and works in Durban. She completed her Bachelors of Technology in photography at the Durban University of Technology in 2017.
Thembi has participated in a number of notable local and international group exhibitions. Being part of the Pride and Loss collaborative exhibition, curated by Prof. Zanele Muholi at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery in Brooklyn, New York in 2018, is a particular highlight in her career to date. Mthembu is also a member of visual arts collective, Amasosha Art Movement
Mthembu’s artistic practice spans a variety of different disciplines and mediums. Her work explores the notions and politics surrounding ‘the body’, with her often using her own body as a site for her artistic exploration of these themes. Although initially trained as a photographer, she now explores various physical and digital artistic mediums such as paint and image manipulation.
