Acrylic paint, archival paper & glue 2020 Dimensions (cm): 70 x 102
Karla Nixon was born in 1990 in Durban, South Africa, and holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Art (2017) from the Durban University of Technology.
Paper is central to Nixon’s practice due to its fragility, everyday usage, recyclability, and because it is one of the most consumable commodities of our time. She makes use of it as her primary medium whether it is cut, embossed, torn or sculpted. The magic and malleability of the medium is incomparable to others.
There is a push and pull of destruction and creation in Nixon’s work. The process of the artworks’ creation, through destruction, is consciously showcased and seen with the ripped edges of each piece of torn paper; painstakingly reassembled into a new, exciting conversation of colour and texture.
