Me, You and Us

 
Vusumuzi Derrick Nxumalo and Mfezeko Gumada
 
Inspired by Muhammad Ali’s 1975 two-word poem, "Me/We", Me, You and Us emphasizes the importance of knowing one's identity in order to pursue shared objectives. In this way, the interaction between self and others in the works of Mfezeko Gumada and Derrick Nxumalo reflect their relationships with social structures.
 
Gumada, an early career artist with a self-curated identity challenges societal norms by being effortlessly authentic to himself and his practice. As a mid-career artist, Nxumalo expresses his social activism through idealised cityscapes and landscapes that reflect on the dystopia of the real world.
The paintings and drawings in Me, You and Us sow the seed for an inter-generational conversation between Nxumalo and Gumada, and their other-worldly scenarios of identity and society advocate for self-realization and authentic connection with others.
